Happy Friday–Penn and Teller

I study social insects for a living. That said, honeybees have always seemed to be rather wimpy, and thus prone to the kind of abuse in this video.

I’d love to see them try this with army ants…

    Is that second picture a close up of an army ant or of a spider?

    This is the major of the army ant Eciton burchelli. Those mandibles are effective deterrents against any larger Penn and Teller sized vertebrate messing with the colony. The Yasuni people of Amazonia use these majors to seal up lacerations–apply to the wound, allow them to clamp down, then pop off the rest of the body. Voila! Sutures!
